Kalalani - saphir padparadcha, pyrope
- almandine, tsavorite, tanzanite
Kalalani est un gisement
primaire de saphir et de pyrope - almandine. Saphir padparadcha a été
découvert en 1989 - 1990. Il est présent dans les pegmatites
désilicifié qui coupent la massif de serpentinite. En 1994
un gisement primaire de tsavorite a été découvert
dans les gneisses adjacent. Quelques échantillons de tanzanite
ont été trouvé dans les sédiments alluviales
du massif Kalalani.
Le gisement de Kalalani est localisé à 100km au nord ouest de Tanga, 6km (14km par une route non goudronnée) au sud du camp Umba. Le terrain est plat, caractérisé par des latérites rouges, couvert par une végétation dense. Le lieu d’extraction appelé « Vipigoni » par les locaux, se trouve à 5km Nord de Kalalani. L'accès à ce gisement est difficile pendant la période de pluie entre mois de décembre et de mars.
Geology : gem deposit is hosted by the metamorphosed rocks of the Usagaran system of the Mozambique Belt. Age of the metamorphism - late proterozoic - early paleozoic.
Rocks are represented by:
- high grade gneisses - granulite facies
- graphitic gneisses
- gneises of amphibolite facies
- metacalcareous rocks
- quartzites
- cristalline limestones
- meta - amphibolites
These rocks surround two isolated bodies of highly altered serpentinite bodies - Umba and Kalalani serpentinite body.

Sapphire and ruby is present in pegmatites that cross cut the serpentinite body. They mesure about 5-10 m long and 2-3 m wide. They are coarse grained - up to 5cm, contain labradorit - andezin plagioclase. They do not contain quartz. Other minerals present are : amphibole, vermiculite, chlorite, biotite, spinel, corundum, kyanite.
Yellow - brown and reddish - orange sapphires ae present in 6m long and 2m wide pegmatites.
Reddish - orange sapphire is present always in patches of clay minerals - golden yellow vermiculite and accompagned by pink spinel of low cabochon quality. - as an indicator mineral.
Yellow - brown sapphire is present in bluish green vermiculite with pleonast as an indicator mineral.
Ruby - only as tabular cristals within biotite - in desilicificated pegmatites - and accompagned by cristals of colour- change - sapphire.
Present in Eastern boundary of the Kalalani deposit in area of meta-amphibolites in contact with serpentinite body. Garnet is present in nodules - they contain flattened crystals in yellowish dolomite.
The best quality material in NE part of the deposit. The SW part is heavily fractured.
Tsavorite
Is present SW of the serpentinite body in quartz lenses accompagned by graphite. They are 1.7km long, large 25m ; they are oriented in SE direction. Width is from few cm till 2m.
